SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL, MALAYSIA
A brief history
HOW WE STARTED
SOCIETY of ST VINCENT De PAUL was founded in 1833 by Blessed Federick Ozanam, a young law student together with six students to help the less fortunate in Paris.
It began as the Conference of Charity which was financed by the individuals providing for the sick and the poor. The Society also collaborated with the Daughters of Charity in providing
for their needs.
The Society was later than placed under the patronage of St Vincent De Paul, 16th century patron saint of charity. As VINCENTIANs from the Conference of the Church of the Assumption we help those in need or living in poverty. We do not just help to provide for their needs but we also listen to them and journey with the families as sometimes all they need is a friend to listen and to care.
Building our community
WHAT WE DO
We hold meetings every 2nd and 4th week of every month on Thursdays. All decisions made at the meetings are approved and the minutes are circulated to all the members.
Home visitations are always the core and heart of all Vincentians. We currently have approximately 30 Friends In Need (FINs) whom we assist by giving the following aid :-
- Cash aid
- Food aid
- School aid (bus fees, tuition fees)
- Assistance in finding a job
Our Conference gives high priority towards the needs of our FINs children when it comes to their education. It is our firm belief that education is one way for poor families to break free from the cycle of poverty. We provide the following assistance to help the children to study
- Tuition aid
- Preschool aid
- Bus fees
The SSVP Education Centre was set up to provide affordable pre-school education to children aged 4 to 6 from marginalised homes in the Petaling Jaya vicinity. The centre is based in Taman Sri Sentosa in Jalan Klang Lama, it serves as a stepping-stone and equips children with a strong education foundation to help them to further their studies.
The Education Centre has many activities throughout the year such as
- Meet The Parents Session
- School Trips i.e the Zoo, Kidzania, Aquaria
- Year-End Graduation and Concert
An event organised by the members to bring about fellowship among our members and Parishioners on the 2nd Sunday of the month. All proceeds from this activity after expenses are added to our Funds.
Blood Donation Drive
This event is held yearly at Assumption Church in cooperation with the National Blood Bank
Christmas Party
The members and the volunteers organise a Christmas Party / Lunch for our FINs and their families. The event is usually held at our Assumption Family house. This also provides an opportunity for all members to have fellowship with our FINs. There are games and goodie bags and prizes given to both children and adults.
Fund Raising Projects
In addition to financial aid from PIHD and generous donors, we carry out fund raising projects to raise funds to help meet our expenses.
