ADVENT WREATHS have 4 candles (3 purple, 1 rose) representing the 4 weeks of Advent.  The purple candles symbolize the prayer, penance, preparatory sacrifices and good works done at this time. The rose candle is lit on the Third Sunday, when the priest also wears rose vestments at Mass.  The Third Sunday is the Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have come to the midpoint of Advent – close to Christmas. The progressive lighting of the candles signifies the expectation and hope surrounding our Lord’s First Coming into the world, and the anticipation of His Second Coming to judge the living and the dead. –
